Hobby Goals - November

So November was actually quite productive other than the whole blogging thing!

Yearly Goals - November

1.  Get 4 games of Warhammer 40K/Age of Sigmar/Kings of War/Frostgrave/other miniature game per month.

Again a pretty huge success (which is really the point of the blog).  I managed to do 2 different tournaments at Armada Games giving me 4 and 3 games.  I also played my buddy John over the Thanksgiving break to playtest my Jekyll Con list over 2 games.  All in all 9 games, quite the success!

2.  Paint 1 unit (Warhammer 40K/AoS/KoW) or 1 war band (Frostgrave) per month.

Here I did very well.  I managed to paint a Horde of Lycans, a Regiment of Lycans, 2 more Beast Packs, 2 Troops of Tribal Hunters, 1 more Shaman, 1 mounted Totem Bearer, 1 Brutox, and 1 more Regiment of Longhorns.  Phew!  All are tabletop at best (pictures coming over the next few posts).  But that only leaves me with a Regiment of Chariots, 2 Regiments of Spirit Walkers, and a Guardian Brute hero.  I suppose I have other units I can build up (a Regiment of Eagles)...but we'll see what I decide to do!

3.  Attend 1 tournament every 3 months (helps with #1).

Double success!  Two different Kings of War tournaments at Armada Games.

4.  Post 1 blog post per week.

So by the time November 30th hit, I will have had at least 4 blog posts.  That counts, right?!?

Look Ahead

The big event moving forward is doing what I need for the Jekyll Con Kings of War tournament.  I will work to finish up the remaining Kings of War units I have for my Herd list and then will either double back to 40K to prep a list with Tyranids (again 90% sure that will be the army) or I will focus on my Kings of War Dwarfs.  I mean...Forces of Nature?

So Games Workshop has been knocking it out of the park.  I admit that while Necromunda seems cool, it isn't something I want to focus on at the moment (though ironically it would be good as it is easier/faster to get games in).  The big focus will ultimately prepping for Adepticon.  Yup, I managed to snag a VIG ticket and opted to join in for both the Kings of War and 40K singles GT's.  Quite a bit step as either would easily be the largest event I'd ever done for either game.

More to come!

Hobby Goals - October

I'll knock out October first...and then will move onto November.

Yearly Goals - October

1.  Get 4 games of Warhammer 40K/Age of Sigmar/Kings of War/Frostgrave/other miniature game per month.

This was a success.  I managed to get 3 KoW games at Crucible in the doubles tournament.  I also got 5 Warhammer 40K games in for the narrative event.

2.  Paint 1 unit (Warhammer 40K/AoS/KoW) or 1 war band (Frostgrave) per month.

I managed to have success here as I was able to paint up a Regiment of Longhorns for my Herd army list in preparation for the doubles.

3.  Attend 1 tournament every 3 months (helps with #1).

Double success!  I managed to do both the Kings of War and Warhammer 40K events at Crucible 6.5.

4.  Post 1 blog post per week.

So this will be a bit of a failure moving forward given that I will post in chunks.  That said, I did at least get a couple of blog posts done in October!  :)

Look Ahead

Definitely a strong focus into Kings of War for October that bled into November...

Hobby Updates

Well I meant to type a bit more about Crucible but found myself busy with work and getting to get some actual games in.  So all in all, I can't say I am sorry I didn't get to post as it meant I got games in...but I guess I do want to write about some of what happened.

Crucible 6.5 - Warhammer 40K Narrative

So though I was unable to provide an update about the 40K Narrative event at Crucible 6.5, I guess I can quickly do so now.  In general, I found myself matched up against some of the tougher opponents or matched up with a less tactical team mate (which itself was cool given it was a narrative event and the purpose was to have fun).  I was a member of team chaos as I alluded to in the fluff for my army in previous posts.  Unlike the last Crucible event, I had the ability to play all 5 of my games and the teams stayed pretty evenly distributed throughout the weekend.

By the end of the two day event, I found I had gone undefeated.  lol, while not 5-0, I had gone 2-0-3 which was not bad at all.  Two of those ties were losses where I pulled out a tie in the last turn.  One of those ties was a guaranteed victory where I let the game slip away in the last turn.  Our team managed to capture the overall victory for the event for the Chaos gods.  I myself managed to get an award for the best fluff for the weekend too!  I was stoked that Tim, the event organizer, had chosen my story for the award.  Though it seemed that nobody cared (not sure if it was that I was a stranger to most of them or if they simply cared not wanting to hear the results for the 40K Grand Tournament)...I still was very pleased to win!

Kings of War

Since Crucible, I have really focused heavily on Kings of War.  On improving my movement and just getting games in.  I went to Armada Games over in Tampa with some of the friends I met during the Crucible team event.  In both tournaments I opted to field my Herd as they were the army I knew best (and had mostly painted).

The first tournament was simply a 1000 point tournament where I went 1-2-1.  In each game I learned a little bit more about my army and different movement tactics for armies ranging from Forces of Nature to Goblins.

The second tournament was an escalation tournament where we started at 1000 points and went up to 1500 and finally 2000 points in the end.  This time I managed to go 0-2-1.

I was definitely touched that in both tournaments I received the sportsmanship award for the day.  Both times I picked up more of the MDF bases Armada makes as well as some Dwarfs for my potentially next KoW army.

General Hobby

Since then, I have managed to paint up the entire force I seek to take to Jekyll Con up in Jekyll Island.  I've also managed to paint up quite a few other units that will help me field more versatile forces for some of my more friendly games and matchups.

There will be 4 games on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.  At the moment we have 16 participants, easily the largest KoW tournament I've ever attended.  I fully expect to go something like 1-3-1 or 0-4-1...but who knows, maybe I will manage to finally pull out some victories!

At the moment I have put my 40K participation on hold.  In part because I have been focusing on Kings of War.  In part because between the holidays and work (over time) limits what I can actually play.  But more than anything because I'm waiting for Chapter Approved to hit and for me to finalize what army I will play competitively moving forward.  I'm 90% sure I will opt to field Tyranids, but Deathguard and Eldar are still a possibility.  Kinda funny given that I was hell bent on playing an Imperial army for the longest time for 8th edition.

The Furious Shivs

The Furious Shivs

 - A Slaaneshi Alpha Legion Warband

The story of the Furious Shivs is legend in the Crucible Sector.  It begins with Alpharius and the Alpha Legion...not ever fully trusting any other Legion, the original members of the Furious Shivs were tasked with infiltrating the Emperor's Children to better understand the nature of their chaotic transformation.  A small company of just over 200 men (led by Brother Captain Mer'kar) joined the Emperor's Children as they battled the White Scars in the Crucible Sector during the Horus Heresy.  Masters of disguise and deception, Mer'kar claimed that he and his men were novitiates that had just been sent to reinforce the 5th Company of Emperor's Children.

Though most Alpha Legion members do not commit to any one deity, Mer'kar and his company were indoctrinated into the worship of Slaanesh.  Being fully committed to the mission at hand, Mer'kar and his lieutenants took the blood oaths and began open worship of He Who Thirsts.  Many battles were fought during the Heresy but ultimately it came to an inglorious end.  With Horus being slain by the Emperor, most of the Traitor Legions, including the Emperor's Children, made a full retreat into the Eye of Terror.  It is at this point that Mer'kar saw an opportunity to fill the power vacuum left on the edge of the Crucible Sector.

Throughout most of the war, Mer'kar and his men had operated as an individual cell with only intermittent communication with Alpharius and the rest of the legion.  When news reached Mer'kar about Alpharius' demise at the hands of Rogal Dorn, Mer'kar decided that he would lead his battle brothers to glory and seek power for himself.  Mer'kar dubbed his warband the Furious Shivs and begun the pursuit of artifacts and weapons that would allow him to gain the strength necessary to obliterate the Loyalist scum.  Gaining favor for Slaanesh would afford him opportunities to commune with beings of the Warp and gain knowledge about where such power could be gained.

Evolution of a Warband

While 202 men originally set out to ghost the Emperor's Children at the beginning of the Heresy, only 116 of the original battle brothers remained.  The passing of time has seen some afflicted with the Obliterator virus while dabbling with warp weaponry.  Others committed more fully to the pursuit of ecstasy (magnified as followers of Slaanesh) and chose to walk the path of a Noise Marine.  Still, other battle brothers have simply stayed true to their original training as Alpha Legion and maintained their Legion tactics and training.

Needing to bolster their ranks, Mer'kar and his First Lieutenant Jorvo have tested other renegade marines and allowed only the best to join their ranks.  While they do employ the use of cultists and other more brutish berzerker marine types, the Furious Shivs only ever have 202 true members to represent and honor the original cell.

Having fought for Slaanesh for nearly 10 millenia and winning countless battles along the way, Mer'kar was shown the location of the Knife of Eternity.  A simple weapon, it had been crafted using the shards of Eldar soul stones and was an item highly coveted by the Dark Prince.  In the year 666 of the 38th Millennium, Mer'kar led his warband into the Covictus system and after subduing the local militia, captured the relic in the name of Slaanesh.  His reward for obtaining such a glorious prize was his ascendance into full daemon-hood as a Daemon Prince of Slaanesh.  Despite the jealousy that many of his subordinates felt at that moment, they had no choice but to submit and continue following Mer'kar.  His Lieutenant Jorvo ascended to the position of Chaos Lord and became the outward face for the Warband when dealing with other traitors and aliens alike.

Librarius of the Dagger

The Librarius for the Furious Shevs has always maintained a keen attachment to the Warp.  Even as Loyalists, Epistolary Dorb and his fellow Librarians would dabble and experiment on the people of conquered planets after the Crusade had departed.  This did not changed in their shift to Chaos...if anything has been turned up a notch.  Mer'kar always favored the Council of the Dagger and it is common to have a sorcerer accompany him on every mission.  Their past experimentation with the Warp on living entities has allowed them to perfect methods of enhancing the performance of the warband.  Mer'kar and the other Sorcerers favor using the Warp to increase the speed and strength of his soldiers rather than manifesting lightning or other more physical weapons.

The Hunger for More

Though the warband has fought together for a long time, there is always a need to advance  whenever possible.  When the Furious Shivs were still in their infancy, infighting cost them multiple victories as a result of jealousy and backstabbing foiling the proper execution of battle plans.  It didn't take Mer'kar long to realize he needed to quash these actions if he wanted the warband to survive long after the events of the Horus Heresy.  Though his chaotic heart relished in the violence, Mer'kar was able to instill into his soldiers a discipline not so dissimilar to the notion of "honor among thieves".  The tool he used as an outlet was simple:  whenever there was a matter in question where one Aspiring Champion thought glory or some other trophy had been wrongfully taken, he could challenge the opponent to a Battle of the Shivs.  It was a simple combat where the two would face off in no armor using only a simple bone shiv as a weapon.  The first to inflict 6 cuts on his opponent would be declared the victor and would claim the spoils as his own.

Simple and brutal, it has proven an effective way to retain some semblance of order.  Lemen, Aspiring Champion and squad leader of the Dissonance (First Squad of Noise Marines) has the most victories in the Battle of Shivs.

The Twins

Oreh and Ireh are twin brothers and head up the "regular" Chaos Space Marine legionnaires whenever they enter battle.  Preferring longer range engagements, the brothers are responsible for organizing the squads and choosing champions whenever they go out on missions.  Many times in the past it has seemed that one of the brothers had been fatally injured only to miraculously recover from their wounds after coming in contact with the other brother.

It is thought that Alpharius and Omegon themselves bestowed upon them a gift or latent Psyker ability that allowed them to share a life force.  Oreh and Ireh work perfectly in concert on the battlefield and have a stranglehold on the Chaos Space Marine element of the warband.  This extends to squads of Chosen, Havocs, and Raptors.

Presence in the Crucible Sector

Having attained daemonhood, it seemed that Mer'kar would be content to sit on his laurels and have his Warband go out and strike at the Imperium, wreaking havoc where ever they were weakest.  But being a Veteran of the Long War compelled Mer'kar to push for more and to one day strike out at the corpse god himself!  With that in mind he again began communing with some of the older denizens of the warp and came to find out about an artifact of great power in the Crucible Sector.  The Vibora Morada was an idol that had been broken in millennia past.  It was shattered into 6 different pieces and the pieces were dispersed to different planets.  Though the Greater Daemon of Slaanesh was purposely vague about what it did, finding all the pieces and fusing them back together would give the wielder a greater control of the Warp in the Crucible Sector.

With images of the site of each of the fragments, Mer'kar and the Furious Shevs set out to recover the fragments to gain dominance in the Crucible Sector.

Crucible 6.5

Well shoot, this kinda got away from me.  6 months.  I guess in that time I did not get much of any of my gaming goals in.  Work is going to ramp up again so I don't see that improving.  Still, gonna try!

This weekend Crucible 6.5 is happening in Orlando/Kissimmee, FL.  Normally Crucible is a Spring event but the organizers are taking a whack at a fall event to see how attendance does.  I guess from there they will settle on a date.

In any case, at the moment I'm slated to participate in the Kings of War doubles event on Friday and then the Narrative event for 40K on Saturday and Sunday.  I haven't played nearly enough of 8th edition to wade into the competitive 40K GT, so I stuck with the narrative stuff.

For the KoW Doubles I'm playing The Herd and partnering up with my buddy John and his Brotherhood army.  For 40K I'm playing as a Slaaneshi themed Alpha Legion army.  I came up with a fluff bit for my Alpha Legion army that I'll be posting shortly.  Hoping to have a blast.  This time I'm staying on-site so it will be easier to just stick around the hotel and not have to drive around Orlando.

Charging up my tablet as well just in case I want to try and catch my Longhorns try to beat the dreaded purple wizard and his K-State Wildcats.  Should be a fun weekend!

Hobby Goals - April

Better late than never?  Quick and dirty, lets get to it!

Yearly Goals - April

1.  Get 4 games of Warhammer 40K/Age of Sigmar/Kings of War/Frostgrave/other miniature game per month.

This was a success.  I was able to get in some games at the beginning of the month at Crucible and then followed it up with a small tournament over at Strangeway Games in the middle of the month.  The rumblings of 8th edition were starting even then with GW's presentation at Adepticon.  I meant to do a tournament over at Dogs of War as well but had to adult.  :(

2.  Paint 1 unit (Warhammer 40K/AoS/KoW) or 1 war band (Frostgrave) per month.

After having done so much in March, I definitely slowed down in April.  I was able to at least assemble and convert quite a few things.  Worked on my dwarfs for Age of Sigmar (changing them from square to round bases) and primed them to boot.  But the big success was painting an Apothecary, two thieves, and some tokens for Frostgrave.  With that I feel I did accomplish my goals to an extent.  I was even able to paint a forge, a book case, and a couple of small buildings for use in Kings of War.

3.  Attend 1 tournament every 3 months (helps with #1).

I was able to attend the tournament at Strangeway Games but that was it.

4.  Post 1 blog post per week.

Yet another big fail.  I started posting well at the beginning of April and then work plus hobby time sidelined most everything else.  Still, I feel I've been able to make some headway on making terrain and prepping stuff for Frostgrave in anticipation of teaching my buddy Sanjay how to play.

Look Ahead

8th edition looming has a lot of my 40K stuff on hold.  I am trying to keep up with rumors but by in large I am focusing my attention elsewhere.  I'm building up my Frostgrave warband and am working on extra minis so I can sit and teach Sanjay about the game.  I'm also slowly working on Age of Sigmar minis (dwarfs).  The Kharadron Overlords are really appealing but other than a unit and their army book, I'm trying to hold off on doing much else.

Terrain is still the focus.  I am building some trees and a few towers but am mostly waiting on some terrain I ordered from Urban Matz for Frostgrave.  It should be enough to cover a 3x3 play area.  I am needing to complete some gantries and walk ways...but can use more terrain.  I do have the ruins of Osgiliath to work on.  They come with some neat statues too to help add flavor to the games.

Strangeway Games Tournament Report (04/15)

Originally I had planned on going into details about the narrative portion of my games at Crucible.  I may still talk about some games but as I had some car issues I was always a bit of a floater on the various teams vying for supremacy that weekend.  I did have 3 great games, 2 of which were doubles match ups with our 1000 point lists.  I did manage to go 3-0 that weekend with the same list.  I won't lie that I was a bit disappointed not to get to field my Conclave of the Burning One...

...still, I did have a ton of fun and look forward to the next narrative event!

That said, there was a tournament at Strangeway Games this past weekend.  It was 1500 points, no Come the Apocalypse Allies, and no Unbound Lists.  I had learned quite a bit of my Tyranids and as such opted to field the doubles list with a few things to help get me to 1500 points.

Tyranid Combined Arms Detachment

HQ - Hive Tyrant (Wings, 2x TL Devourers w/ Brainleech Worms) - 230 points
HQ - Hive Tyrant (Wings, 2x TL Devourers w/ Brainleech Worms) - 230 points

Troop - 30x Termagants (TL Spinefists x30) - 120 points
Troop - Tervigon (Electroshock Grubs) - 205 points

Elite - 2x Venomthrope - 90 points
Elite - Zoanthrope - 50 points
Elite - Zoanthrope - 50 points

Heavy - 3x Biovores - 120 points

Formation - The First Curse (Genestealer Cult)

HQ - Patriarch (2x Genestealer Familiar, +1 Mastery Level) - 125 points
Elite  -20x Purestrain Genestealers - 280 points

1500 points on the nose.  I had toyed with different things to help me fill the last few points but opted to bring two Venomthropes to make it harder on my opponents to remove that necessary cover.  I was not sure how The First Curse formation would work but was confident I could at least have fun.

Upon arriving to Strangeway, it was different than the previous tournaments as only Skip and Blake were present (rather than 7-8 dudes ready to roll some dice).  People slowly started trickling in and while it initially looked like the tournament wouldn't make, we ended up with a total of 6 people ready to roll some dice.

Game 1 - Ynari Eldar

Game 1 I had the pleasure of playing against Darren, a guy I had met playing Frostgrave at a friend's house.  He brought an Ynari list that was focused mostly on Dark Eldar and Harlequin troops.  There was a single Eldar Autarch in the list (for Reserve manipulation I suspect).  The list was predicated on getting off some timely Soul Burst actions and having multiple units unload poison.  As a Tyranid player, this could work really well as I had no metal bawkses for me to hide my units.  I did however have two Flyrants and Psyker superiority.

The mission was Crusade (?  D3 + 2 Objectives).  I rolled a 3 for my Genestealers deployment and opted to deploy them near a Skyshield Landing pad so I could minimize any losses until I used Return to the Shadows.  Darren won the roll to deploy/go first and I failed to seize the initiative.

I deployed in such a way that all my units at the very least received a 3+ Cover Save (2+ in ruins).  Darren fired some pot shots first turn but other than losing about 4 Genestealers, was no worse for wear.  I pushed up my Flyrants and managed to take out both of the Venoms he had pushed up for pot shots.  I managed to pin both the units but also had my first chance to see Soulburst in action.  He managed to put 2 wounds on my Flyrant in my turn but his turn was next.

On his turn, Darren was unlucky and managed to only get one of his two "death squads" in.  One was a full unit of 7 Harlequins with Fusion Pistols and Harlequin Kisses.  In the unit was an Archon with a typical 2+ Shadowfield and a kitted out Autarch (Fusion Gun, Banshee Mask, Power Sword, etc).  The other "death squad" didn't come in and consisted of an Archon court with Slyth and Medusae and an Archon as well (with a Webway Portal).

Still, between the remaining warriors and the Harlequin shots, I lost my Warlord to a good amount of 6's rolled.  Darren was in disbelief but it was a good amount of focus fire that brought him down.  He turbo boosted some units around but that was it.  He did run his Harlequin unit and left his Warlord off on a far edge within the movement arc of my Flyrant.

On my turn I pushed my Flyrant up and used some Psychic Shriek shenanigans with my Genestealers.  I knew I could not charge but I could still push up and threaten some of the remaining units.  I shot my Flyrant at the Harlequin squad and hit with all my hits and wounded 10 times.  Darren passed all but two LOS rolls.  His Warlord had to make two saves.  One a 5.  The other...a 1.  Strength 6 meant he got insta-gibbed.

From this point on the game pretty much went downhill.  I managed to spread my troops out to capture two more objectives giving me a total of 3 (thanks to Objective Secured).  My Genestealers were eliminated by the Court of the Archon but at best Darren had one objective with my Flyrant contesting the last objective in his deployment.  The result was a very hard fought win for the Tyranids.  Already 1-0, I had met my one objective for the day.

Game 2 - Necron CAD

Interestingly enough, there were a total of 6 armies that day, 4 of which were purple.  My second match was against Anthony and his Necrons.  He had come to the store thinking there was an Apocalypse game to play, not a tournament.  Still he built a list and refused to field a Decurion detachment.  In hindsight he mentioned wanting to field a Monolith to help manipulate his Warriors' movement.

Anthony won the roll to go first and deploy first and like the last time I played against him, I rolled a 6 to Seize (I had the Warlord trait giving me +1 to my Seize roll).  Again I rolled a 3 for my Genestealers and opted to deploy in my zone and simply Return to the Shadows.  Maelstrom Objectives would be the name of the game.

I pushed up Turn 1 but was unable to do much damage.  In his turn he pushed up and took some pot shots on my Flyrants but did little damage.

Turn 2 proved to be very pivotal.  I put 2 or so wounds on the Lychguard and whittled down some of the Warriors and Immortals in his deployment zone.  I also managed to roll a 6 for my Genestealers to deploy within 3 inches of a unit and charge.  80 attacks at Strength 5 with Rending and I needed every single one of them to take out the Lychguard.

Having drawn very bad Maelstrom cards, Anthony made a very bold move to deep strike into my deployment and capture an objective (of which he had 2 cards) and eliminate a unit in the same turn.

Anthony pulled to an even 3-3 tie but in my turn I managed to score 3 more cards and eliminate his Warlord putting him behind the 8 ball.  He did bring in his Doom Scythe but with only a small blast and some Tesla, he could only do a limited amount of wounds on my units.

By the end of the game I had amassed around 12 or 13 points to Anthony's 3.  Amazingly my Tyranids had gone 2-0.  At this point Skip (the store owner) mentioned that I was the only player who had gone 2-0 with everybody else going 1-1 at this point.  As I had sent half of the players to 1-1, it was up to a random roll to see who would be my third opponent.

Skip drew the lucky number.

Game 3 - Emperor's Children plus Renegade Knight

While I wish I had pictures of the game, Skip respectfully asked me to abstain from taking pictures of the game.  He is participating in an online painting contest where pictures of his army have to reported in a specific way and it evidently limits what other pictures can be taken.

Skip's army was a bit of a ringer army with a couple of Chaos Space Marine squads as well as a unit of Chosen with a whole lot of Plasma Guns...all units in Rhinos with a bit of a mini-death star with a Chaos Lord, a Dark Apostle, and another Chaos Lord.  The big hitter in his army was a Renegade Knight with AA, horde unit control, and the D-Chainsword.

With it being another Maelstrom mission and me making a new unit of gaunts every turn for four straight turns, the writing was on the wall.  I slowly took out every unit he had except his Renegade Knight.  We got to the point where only his Knight remained but I had trouble putting more than 3 hull points on him.  We were the last game going but by turn 4 I was ahead on Maelstrom something like 9-1.

Victory was assured.  I had surprisingly gone 3-0 for the day and won best overall.  I received a good prize and opted to buy a Start Collecting box of Skitari.  It would allow me the chance to field a unit of Skitarii Rangers in case I wanted to mix things up.  It also puts me on the road to a War Convo if I opted to ever go that way in the future.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoy playing with Skip and the gang out at Strangeway Games.  I know that I can be a bit intense and tend to really zone in when playing the game.  While I don't think of myself as an unpleasant player I can see where I can lead to games where it isn't fun.

Should I drink a beer before every game?  Should I take some shots?  Should I just relax?

I don't know.  I did listen to a podcast the other day where last year's ITC winner talked about how the games against the "mid level" players are the worst.  They're so concerned with trying to get ahead that they'll do everything to win.  I'd like to think that winning doesn't matter as much but once victory is within my sights, I can't help but focus on it at the expense of banter.

In any case, some games have been ultra intense at Strangeway.  Others have been super fun.  Perhaps I really do need to offer other options where my opponent can go monster hunting or perhaps do a shooting gallery game.  If I concede to begin the game, does that remove any temptation of wanting to push for the W?

I plan on trying to go in to play in Apocalypse games in the future.  I think one is scheduled for the end of the month.  I'm also wanting to learn more Age of Sigmar at Strangeway as others are learning as well.

Saturday was a lot of fun.  I even got to leave in time to go enjoy an evening out with my wife at a nearby brewery.

I've considered giving away my own prizes for the best opponent I had.  Perhaps for the best tactician I faced.  Any ideas on what I should focus on in terms of giving away a prize?

Crucible 6 Doubles Tournament

So on the first full day of Crucible (Friday), I opted to play in a double tournament for Warhammer 40K.  I had been in touch with some of the TO's about it and was paired up with a dude from Orlando named Michael.  I think I mentioned in the past that we took our time reaching a consensus on what to play.  Initially we were going to go with Imperials (I was looking at a soft Iron Hands death star).  We then started discussing Chaos Space Marines but every list we came up with had deficiencies and would depend on some form of summoning to get more units on the table.

Ultimately we settled on Tyranids.  I had hesitated since Michael was fielding them for the GT.  But he came up with a pretty solid list that we both fielded:

Tyranid Combined Arms Detachment (925 points)

HQ - Hive Tyrant (Wings, 2x TL Devourers w/ Brainleech Worms) - 230 points
HQ - Hive Tyrant (Wings, 2x TL Devourers w/ Brainleech Worms) - 230 points

Troop - 30x Termagants (TL Spinefists x30) - 120 points
Troop - Tervigon (Cluster Spines) - 200 points

Elite - Venomthrope - 45 points
Elite - Zoanthrope - 50 points
Elite - Zoanthrope - 50 points

If the list seems familiar it is because it is the basis of what I'm wanting to field to the tournament this weekend.  So we had to take 310 points worth of Troops and were restricted to CAD's (though ForgeWorld units were fair game).  Ultimately we had the ability to generate more ObSec units via the Tervigon, we knew that Grav would be limited, and we had 18 warp charges between the two of us (and plenty of Synapse).

Game 1 - White Scars/Sisters of Battle

Our first game we faced off against a combo of SoB and White Scars.  We were able to choose our primary mission and opted for Kill Points as both of our armies had 18 a piece and we had the tougher units to deal with.  The secondary objectives were a selection of Maelstrom objectives similar to ITC where we would choose two a turn.

Initially we pushed up hard and though that we could crush them by virtue of shot saturation.  Unfortunately some bad rolls put us behind the eight ball in the first two rounds but as the game wore on our army actually increased in strength.  We lost three of our four Flyrants by Turn 2 but despite that were able to put a hurt on their army.  This was one of the first times I'd ever faced St. Celestine with the new rules.  One of the most memorable moments was when she and her Gemena Superiora (sp?) charged a unit of Gaunts and ended up actually *LOSING* combat.

In the end we pulled out an 11-10 win.  We would've been able to win the Maelstrom mission but we had one turn where we bet we could eliminate 3 units instead of just 2.  A single scout was able to survive the attacks of 10 gaunts and a Tervigon and spoil our victory.  Had we gotten the 3 points that round, we would've handily won that objective.  Still, it was a great game and had a blast learning a bit more on how to better control my bugs.

None can withstand the Great Devourer!

Game 2 - Tyranid and Tyranid

So we knew after the tournament started that there was a mirror Tyranid list participating.  We figured we would never have to face them...right?!?!

hah...well so much for that thought.  Their list was almost identical to ours.  The main difference is they sacrificed their Brain Bugs in favor of Biovores.  In general that could prove to be troublesome as Biovores just eat up enemy infantry.   We had the initial advantage in Warp Charges but that quickly dwindled as they had second turn and were able to push into our lines and start eliminating Flyrants and Zoanthropes alike.  The main mission was table quarters and the secondary mission was still the same as before (modified Maelstrom).

By turn three there had been a mass amount of carnage but the main difference was that our team had both of our Warlords and their team had lost both.  They had been hampered by the lack Synapse.  Originally they thought that their teammates could provide Synapse to their ally but the rules clearly stated that no benefits (or penalties) would transfer between armies.

The game went back and forth but once our swarms had dug in, it was hard to eliminate everything.  We played to Turn 5 and rolled a 2 for the game to end.  When we summed up the points we had gotten to a perfect tie.  9 points to each side.  We tied the primary.  We tied the secondary.  We had the same amount of tertiary points.

I learned more about Flyrant manipulation in this game and managed to clean up some rules regarding the Psyker phase and how Flying Monstrous Creatures work (i.e. evidently I don't have Skyfire when I'm Gliding, just when Swooping).

So at this point we were 1-0-1.  We had played a close first game and an even closer second game.  One definite difference maker is that both Michael's Tervigon and my own bottled up with doubles on Turn 1 (first time that ever happened to me).  Unfortunately, our opponents didn't bottle up until Turn 5 so that definitely gave them the advantage in terms of number of units.

Preparing for the oncoming enemy swarm...all that tasty biomass!

My Tervigon was too slow at munching on my opponent's Gaunts

Game 3 - The Unholy Alliance...Iron Warriors and Iron Hands

One thing I had not anticipated was playing a list where both armies cherry picked the best out of an armies that would normally be "Come the Apocalypse" partners.  Nothing stopped us from doing this and our opponents took full advantage!

The Iron Hands list was not unlike one I would've fielded only he opted to bring a shooty death star (Grav Guns plus Storm Shields) and found the points to field St. Celestine.  The Iron Warriors list had two Sicaran tanks as well as multiple units of Oblits to field.

With this being our last game, both of us had to win objectives as our Primary mission.  With no Psyker defense to speak of, we figured that our Flyrants would have a field day against them.  That definitely could've been the case...if I didn't lose one of my Flyrants on Turn 2 to a Perils of the Warp.  I cast a Warp Blast on one of the Sicarans and failed to hit.  I rolled a 1 on the table and proceeded to roll an 11 on the Leadership test.  Game over.  Still, the Nids fought back hard to try and neutralize our opponents.  Unfortunately losing the Flyrant really limited our offensive capability and the Iron Hands death star hit our back field and took out units one by one.

Again we gambled with a Maelstrom mission of needing to take out three units in one turn but we failed to take the last hull point off a Sicaran tank to succeed in that mission.  At that point the game got out of hand and while I still had a multitude of Gaunts, there isn't a whole lot they can do against Marines and Obliterators.

Our lines were over run...but we wouldn't give up without a fight!

So we ended the day at 1-1-1.  We finished in the top half of the tournament but were well out of contention for any awards.  I did learn quite a bit about the Tyranid army and better ways of deploying in 7th edition.  Perhaps it matters less given that 8th edition is around the corner.

But still it was good to field the army.  Michael was a really outstanding general and often I found myself consulting with him for advice on what to do when presented multiple options.

I did like how his Nids were all red and bone color while mine were blue and bone color.  His were painted far superior to mine...but I could happyily say that all of our units were fully painted!

I had originally thought that the doubles tournament was a really fluffy event meant for throwing some dice and drinking some beer.  But it proved to be far more competitive than I had anticipated.  The winning lists were fielding a combination of summoning Daemons and renegades.  They received perfect scores in every round.

I'll be ready when Crucible 6.5 comes around!

Upcoming Strangeway Games Tournament

This upcoming weekend (April 15th), Strangeway Games is having another 40K tournament.  The requirements are pretty straight forward.  1500 points.  No unbound lists.  Forgeworld allowed but must be approved.

I imagine that just like last time there is a good chance that there will be a ton of crazy Forgeworld armies.  However because I had a great time playing with Tyranids this past weekend at Crucible, I'm going to keep with it and field some more bugs.  It is pretty much a similar list I've been playing off and on since 6th edition.  I tend to normally go 1-1-1 or thereabouts with it on average...but at least it is fully painted and normally gives me quite a few options to take on opponents.

Here's the list so far:

Tyranid Combined Arms Detachment

HQ - Hive Tyrant (Wings, 2x TL Devourers w/ Brainleech Worms, Electroshock Grubs) - 240 points
HQ - Hive Tyrant (Wings, 2x TL Devourers w/ Brainleech Worms, Electroshock Grubs) - 240 points

Troop - 30x Termagants (TL Spinefists x30) - 120 points
Troop - Tervigon (Electroshock Grubs) - 205 points

Elite - Venomthrope - 45 points
Elite - Zoanthrope - 50 points
Elite - Zoanthrope - 50 points

Heavy - 3x Biovores - 120 points

Formation - The First Curse (Genestealer Cult)

HQ - Patriarch (2x Genestealer Familiar, +1 Mastery Level) - 125 points
Elite  -20x Purestrain Genestealers - 280 points

Pretty simple.  So this list leaves me with 25 points on the table.  What to do with it though?

So to start off I come in with two Flyrants.  They're pretty much the dudes that do work in the Nid codex.  To protect them in Turn 1 (and subsequently to an extent), I have a Venomthrope giving them Shrouded to start the game.  I picked up a few pointers on deployment from my doubles matches at Crucible.  My main concern at the moment is whether it is worth it to even have Electroshock Grubs.  In most situations, they can angle to get rear armor or a more favorable position.  I will normally shoot both the Devourers instead of the grubs as well making them a bit unnecessary.  So I could definitely stand to trim 20 points off the list right there.

The two basic troops have served me well...Termagants and a Tervigon.  Generally I enjoy using Spinefists as they give me some options for FMC's as well as give me a few more chances on Overwatch.  The Tervigon definitely can go down to Grav weaponry but staying near the Venomthrope and in decent cover gives me a shot at perhaps surviving.  Catalyst is huge, but there are other options.  In the mean time I start cranking babies out.  Only in one match in nearly 15 or so games have I been plugged up after 1 turn.  So most of the time I will generate more ObSec units and go with it.

So Zoanthropes offer me a few options.  Each one gives me 2 dice.  They give me Synapse.  They also give me some anti-vehicle using Warp Blast.  Again, at Crucible I was able to successfully use it to put some hurt on enemy vehicles.  They are somewhat easy to hide in ruins and keep feeding dice to my Flyrants.

That leaves us with Biovores.  I am a huge fan of using them to try and snipe out a heavy weapon or important character.  Strength 4, AP4 isn't great, but it also gives me a pretty good form of crowd control for fighting other horde armies.  I am normally content to field two but fielded three because of the lack of options.  I could just as easily opt to go down to 2 and gain 40 more points (putting me at 60 if I give up Electroshock Grubs on my Flyrants).  In total I'd have 85 points to play with but I'm not sure there is a better way to use those points.

...and that leaves allies.

So I could've very easily gone with the formation that gives me multiple Flyrants...but I don't own Crones or Harpies.  I also only have 2 built up Flyrants (I can probably build 2 more but don't have much interest in doing so).  As a result, I decided to check into the Genestealer Cult options.

While in general I love their infiltrate possibilities, I figured I'd give The First Curse formation a go.  It gives me an ultra awesome Broodlord to take on opponents and better yet, gives all my Genestealers a 5++ to deal with all sorts of things like Flamers.  It also creates a huge unit on the board that most opponents will want to deal with giving my Flyrants even more options to deal with things they want to deal with.

The Broodlord was upgraded to ML2 so he could try for Invisibility twice at the very least.  In most situations having Psychic Scream (Shriek?) is good enough for me.  Really most everything is good in the chart.  Invisibility?  Awesome.  Shrouding?  Works great with Stealth on Genestealers.  Terrify?  Could use the -1 to Leadership for Shriek.  Dominate or Hallucination?  Meh but at least they could work.  Mental Fortitude is the only lose but I can only roll this once and I'd still have Shriek.

So that's it.  Quite a few options and threats with the list.  It is not the best at dealing with Vehicles but I have both the shooting phase and psychic phase to deal with them potentially.

I need to figure out what would be best.  I'm 75% sure I'll remove the grubs on the Flyrants and free up 20 points.  So that would put me at 45 points.  I could add a second Venomthrope to make the unit more survivable.  I could field a unit of Hormagants but there is little use to them without any additional upgrades (Toxin Sacs or Adrenal Glands).

I could also opt to simply add a second unit of Termagants to keep in my backfield but that seems like a waste.

Crucible 6 General Thoughts

So these last few weeks (particularly the weekends) have been busy.  Travel to NYC.  Crucible.  This was the first weekend where I didn't have anything other than the normal OT to do at work.  It afforded me the time to get a trial game in of Shadow War Armageddon with my buddy Sanjay.

I have started painting a bit more.  Mostly focusing on my Kings of War stuff but already I feel the allure of wanting to prep a specific team for the new Necromunda game.  I guess I'll write about that some other time.  But yes, Crucible 6 came and went.  It happened at the Park Inn by Radisson in Kissimmee, FL.

It was a smorgasbord of gaming of all types ranging from all things GW, Kings of War, WarmaHordes, Bolt Action, Guild Ball, and a ton of board games.  The Firelock Games folks were there to demo Blood and Plunder as well!

I need to get better at taking pictures of events but you can go to the Facebook page for the Crucible folks if you want more pictures of the area.  I ended up staying one night at the Park Inn (I had reserved my timeshare up in Orlando), and thought it was good for the price.  It isn't a super fancy hotel but I didn't expect it to be.  But the convention rate definitely made it attractive as an option.

I was very happy to find out that the guys are switching the dates for future Crucible events from the spring to the fall.  This year we'll get a Crucible 6.5 in October.  It works out great as it takes the slot Feast of Blades used to occupy.  Though I do wonder if the newly announced SoCal Open put on by Frontline Gaming will cause similar issues to what Adepticon caused.

So I myself participated in the Friday doubles tournament and then got to at least play in 3 of the 5 matches for the narrative play on Saturday and Sunday.  The doubles tournament was far more competitive than I thought it would be but I guess I will anticipate it a bit better in the future.  The narrative was a ton of fun and while I was never able to field my 1850 point list (the whole reason for wanting to play Necrons), the army performed well.  I'll do a couple of writeups for both of the events in the future.  I'll include a few pictures I took of my games while at the convention.

The tables were great.  I loved all the terrain and would highly recommend the narrative to anybody wanting to have good fun while throwing some dice.

Hobby Goals - March

I guess I just can't seem to hit the right day!  February I was early.  March I'm late.  But still, I've made some progress on the hobby goals.  Gotta keep at it!

Yearly Goals - March

1.  Get 4 games of Warhammer 40K/Age of Sigmar/Kings of War/Frostgrave/other miniature game per month.

So I'm going to go ahead and say this was a success.  Going to Crucible 6 on the last weekend allowed me to play a total of 6 games over the weekend.  I played 3 matches on Friday in the Doubles Tournament.  Unfortunately car troubles sidelined me on Saturday morning so on Saturday + Sunday I only got a total of 3 more games in the narrative portion of the weekend.  I know that technically should be April but they were what I was building towards all of March.  Check!

2.  Paint 1 unit (Warhammer 40K/AoS/KoW) or 1 war band (Frostgrave) per month.

Things definitely slowed down after the end of #squaduary.  I kept working on my Necrons but at a much slower pace.  I was able to paint my Nightbringer C'Tan, a flying Hive Tyrant, two 5 man squads of Flayed Ones, and squad of Immortals.  Though I still think I need to do more work on them, I definitely completed this.  Check!

3.  Attend 1 tournament every 3 months (helps with #1).

Big check.  At this point I've done 3 tournaments and two narrative campaign days for Warhammer 40K.  All in all that means I was able to do a total of 5 events.  Much better than all of 2016 and we're only 3 months into 2017!

4.  Post 1 blog post per week.

This was a pretty big fail.  With all the travel and work taking up my time, I rarely had the desire to pop onto my computer at night and type.  When I did, it was to polish up my list or do some research on other things (trips, activities, etc).  I only had a whopping 2 posts in March.  I'd like to make up for it and have a much stronger April.  I don't think this post should count but hopefully I can get back to roughly 10 or so posts.  I have plenty of pictures from Crucible and should have plenty of content.

Look Ahead

So I didn't get nearly any instructional games in.  But March was also big as GW announced a lot of new games and such.  Already we have Shadow War: Armageddon to look forward to but even bigger are the whispers of 8th edition.  I had planned on perhaps honing my skills and working on an army for competitive events...but with a change on the horizon I feel I should dedicate more time to Kings of War (as it shouldn't change nearly as much).  I have yet to even look at anything in the most recent Clash of Kings update.

I should keep painting my Space Marines at the very least.  I know my Necrons are going to go back on the shelf for the moment along with my Tyranids.  I'll have to figure out what I want to play for Shadow War: Armageddon, but that shouldn't be too difficult.  I think?

I've already started work on some of my Beastmen/Herd army for Kings of War.  I need to paint them up and base them and then move back to finish up some Minotaurs I started back in October (!) of last year.

I also plan on working on some terrain for use in both Frostgrave and Kings of War!

Crucible Doubles Partner

So originally the only real thing I wanted to do at Crucible was play in the Narrative events on Saturday and Sunday.  But with a full 3 day ticket, I figured it would be neat if I could do something on Friday instead.  Sure enough, there was a doubles tournament happening on Friday.  3 rounds.  1850 points.  No formations/LoW/Gargantuans/Super Heavies.  925 points/person and 310 of those points had to be dedicated to Troops.  Sounded interesting!

I had originally pegged one of my buddies to play with me but life's gotten pretty hectic for him and it left me without a partner.  This past week the event organizers were asking people to register for what they wanted to play and while I mentioned I was a go for the Narrative, I didn't have a partner for the doubles event.

They managed to match me up with a guy named Michael.  We've actually been sending each other ideas for lists.  It started with Imperials with both of us fielding a form of Space Marines.  While trying to iron out the details of those lists we started talking about Chaos Space Marines and dual Deathguard Lists.  Unfortunately, those lists always seemed to be really points intensive and really limited how many bodies we'd put on the board.  Normally we'd fall back on something like summoning but with only 3-4 Warp dice to rely on, we opted to probably table that idea.

Then we started talking about Nids and voila, instantly I was sold.  The list should be pretty tough and it brings answers to a of other potential problems.  The main vulnerability of the list (as always) are the Tau.  I fully intend to see at least a few Riptides in some lists so I'm not sure how we'll tackle them.  But for now...Hive Fleet Malygos will see the table again!

It's been a while since I last played Tyranids.  Probably a good year and a half to two years.  But I'm up for the challenge!

Busy Week, Hobby Time, A Primarch

This past week seemed to fly by.  Ironically it was a full week of work but I could never seem to catch up on sleep.  One night I think I must've gotten nearly 10 hours of sleep and yet still I went to work feeling like a zombie.  Hopefully changing my routine will help things.  But I foresee a week full of cleaning and chores ahead of me.

That said, I was still able to put in a wee bit of hobby time.  With me narrowing down my lists for Crucible, I dropped what should be the last of the models I'm stripping into the Simple Green vat.  Though I should only need about 2 or 3 Destroyer models, I opted to drop as many as I could fit (in this case, 9).  I hope to brush them clean of their old paint job on Monday or Tuesday and prime them on Wednesday or Thursday night.

I did wash some of my HQ units with black as well as my second Canoptek Spyder.  But I really need to work on getting some of my Scarabs ready.  I figure that getting roughly 7-9 ready should suffice for any Scarab Farm shenanigans...however an opponent might ignore them, leaving me with plenty of options moving forward.  They are fast little buggers and can rapidly outpace the Spyders.

Though I did argue with myself about potentially losing the snow theme, for now I'm moving forward with the idea.  It is funny because I always thought that the white color scheme with a black wash and then details picked out would be easy; however the consensus seems to be it is a tough scheme to execute due to the difficulty of painting white models.  In hindsight I should've probably stuck with Lead Belcher and then picked out the blue details.  Oh well!

Bag o Dice

One thing I did pick up this week from Amazon was Chessex's popular "Bag o Dice".  In this case I bought the 1 [lbf] bag with only D6's in there.  I probably could've used an assortment of D8, D10, D12, and D20's but I also wanted options if I decide to move forward with another idea...

YouTube Batreps

....namely, YouTube battle reports (or Batreps for short).  This is something I'd toyed with in the past and while I would like to record some of my games with my friends and such, I'm not sure I'm willing to put in the work/money to do it right.  From what I've gathered, beyond the things like having a good personality and being able to banter, there are a few basics to take on.  Namely, I need to have a good camera, good sound, and good lighting.  I think that a lot of the paint jobs I'd do would be good enough for table top and thus good enough to post.  But had to do a bit more investigating on what to get.

As for as I can tell, a Canon Vixia HF R700 would work great.  It has a pretty good quality (can record in 720-1080P) and has a microphone jack as well.  For a moment I thought I might be able to snag one off of Best Buy for $199.99, but it seems to be long gone.  I have found various "bundurus" on Amazon that would provide a tripod, memory card, and in some cases even some lighting.

Suffice to say, there are enough after market components that I can get a good microphone and even a couple of LED lights to help me with lighting.

But even having satisfied the quality requirements for audio and video, I still need to figure out how I'd process said videos.  I need to think about things a bit more as this isn't a random investment.  Plus at the moment, it isn't like I have a ton of time to do much either.

Rise of a Primarch

Of course the big news this week has been the release of rules and fluff for the return of Roboute Gulliman.  Unlike most, I harbor no ill will towards the Ultramarines and find him to be a very interesting albeit "goodie two shoes" style hero.  Given how "grim-dark" the setting can be at times, it is a bit refreshing to see a character like Roboute re-introduced.

All fluff aside, his rules are what has caught my eye.  He seems to be a beast in close combat and while his shooting isn't ultra powerful, he will be hitting most anything he needs/wants.   He does seem to be a great force multiplier but the only issues I've had thus far with him is the fact that he is a Monstrous Creature and as a result does not have the Independent Character special rule.

As it stands, the game is slowly creeping more and more in favor of "death star" type units being the best.  Him having the IC rule would instantly make him that much more surviveable.  There are ways to insure that he stays on the board much longer (Invisibility in particular), but it is far from being a guarantee.

I will be interested to learn of the formations provided by the last of the Gathering Storm books.  Perhaps one will allow him to form a super unit with Cypher and the GK Librarian.

For the moment, I'm content that the story is moving forward.  Killing off the Emperor would be a huge step for the lore.  Something that has pretty much not changed in decades.  As a fan of the setting, I'm definitely waiting on pins and needles to see where things go!

Crucible List - A Little More Thought

So I had some time to perhaps hash out some ideas on what to take to Crucible for the narrative event.  I know that the Decurion is lost to me but it doesn't mean I couldn't try and work something else in.  I actually considered giving up the Conclave of the Burning One in favor of a Necron Royal Court Formation (allowing me 3 Crypteks that would give me +1 to Reanimation Protocols).  But really at that point I'm trying to hard to simply maintain the 4+ RP roll.

Instead I started with what I posted about before and decided to move forward with the following lists (for now):

1000 Point Level

Necron Combined Detachment

HQ - Destroyer Lord (Warlord, Phase Shifter, Warscythe, Nightmare Shroud) - 190 points

Troop - 5x Immortals (Night Scythe) - 215 points
Troop - 10x Warriors (Ghost Ark) - 235 points

Elite - 10x Flayed Ones - 130 points

Fast - 3x Canoptek Scarabs - 60 points
Fast - 3x Destroyers - 120 points

Heavy - Canoptek Spyder - 50 points

The idea a this point level is the ability to deal with different problems.  In most situations I would seek to hold the Scarabs back and get them to a unit of 5 before pushing forward.  As a result, my Spyder would guard a rear objective or stay back and help my ally's shooty fire unit.

My Warriors would make a slow advance and the Immortals would serve as a method of delivering a tough ObSec unit behind the enemy lines.  Plus it at least gives me a single flyer to use when interacting with my opponent.

I'd join my Destroyer Lord to my Flayed Ones and would either Deep Strike or would push them forward.  In this situation, I might opt to simply infiltrate them and push my Destroyer Lord forward as a tank for my Destroyers until he can detach and go elsewhere.  Having 6x Strength 5, AP3 shots will deal with a lot of Marine units as well.

1850 Point Level

Necron Combined Detachment

HQ - Destroyer Lord (Warlord, Phase Shifter, Warscythe, Nightmare Shroud) - 190 points
HQ - Orikan the Diviner- 120 points

Troop - 5x Immortals - 85 points
Troop - 5x Immortals - 85 points
Troop - 5x Immortals - 85 points
Troop - 10x Warriors (Ghost Ark) - 235 points

Elite - 5x Lychguard (Hyperphase Sword, Dispersion Shields) - 150 points
Elite - 6x Deathmarks - 108 points
Elite - 10x Flayed Ones - 130 points

Fast - 3x Canoptek Scarabs - 60 points
Fast - 3x Tomb Blades (3x Shadowlooms) - 57 points

Heavy - 2x Canoptek Spyder - 100 points

Formation - Conclave of the Burning One

Elite - C'Tan Shard of the Nightbringer - 240 points
HQ - Cryptek (Phase Shifter, The God Shackle, The Solar Staff) - 115 points
HQ - Cryptek (The Veil of Darkness) - 90 points

The band is back together!  So this list is very similar to what I've been fielding.  I have the option of attaching my Destroyer Lord to either Orikan and the Lychguard or to the Flayed Ones, depending on what is needed or how many threats I need to put on the table.  I was leftover with 75 points on the intial build of the list and decided to keep my Tomb Blades as late game objective grabbers.  With only 18 points left, I figured getting an extra Deathmark might be nice to give me a few added shots to bring down a big baddie.

Similar to before, my Scarabs wait to get built up a bit by my Canoptek Spyder unit...who in turn still stays behind to help guard an objective near Immortals.  Even at full strength, Orikan, a Destroyer Lord, and only 5x Lychguard aren't really scary but will go toe to toe with quite a few units all the same.

I had contemplated perhaps joining in on the grand tournament instead.  In that situation Cody's Daemon list with Magnus intrigued me.  But I don't have many opportunities to play test it and learn all the nuances.  Not to mention I'd need to paint up far more units (in addition to everything else I'd summon).

I'm really looking forward to the list above.  I can try to come up with more unit synergy but honestly think that the list is generally fluffy (outside of perhaps the presence of Orikan the Diviner) and should lead to some interesting games.

I need to make some of this awesome Necron crystal terrain!

Hobby Goals - February

So I know there is technically 1 more day in February but I want to make it a habit to re-hash my goals and whether I'm keeping up or not.  So without further adieu...

Yearly Goals - February

1.  Get 4 games of Warhammer 40K/Age of Sigmar/Kings of War/Frostgrave/other miniature game per month.

I have managed to get in 6 games total for the month of February.  I played 3 games at the Crucible Narrative prep at the beginning of the month and 3 games at the Strangeway Games 40K 2000 point tournament this past Saturday.  Check!

2.  Paint 1 unit (Warhammer 40K/AoS/KoW) or 1 war band (Frostgrave) per month.

So I've been participating in the #squaduary challenge online.  While I haven't finished 100% on my Necron Immortals I plan on putting some snow on the bases to finish them up.  I did go pretty simple (primed white, washed black, dry brushed white, picked out blue details and highlighted with a brighter blue)...but they still look pretty good for tabletop.  Even better, I did a squad of 10 which in most cases will be two squads of 5.  Check!

3.  Attend 1 tournament every 3 months (helps with #1).

Victory!  So I wouldn't count the Crucible prep as a tournament persay, it did have the general feel of a tournament.  Plus I had already played in a tournament in January so that (technically counts).  Lucky for me, I played in a tournament this past weekend.

4.  Post 1 blog post per week.

I've made 12 blog posts in February (not counting this one) meaning I on average posted 3 per week.  I understand that I didn't state "average" but in this case I did post at least one per week as well.  I was talking with my best friend and mentioned that this is mostly for my own use to be able to better reflect on what I've done this year.  Still...if anybody gains some entertainment and/or knowledge from this blog, even better!

Look Ahead

March is definitely looking like a month where I will be busy with work and perhaps some amount of travel.  Still, I should be able to still get some more games in.  I'm hoping to play some how-to games with my close friend Sanjay and should also have Crucible at the end of the month (granted it straddles March and April).

I'm thinking this might be the list I take to Crucible for the 1850 portion of my games:

Necron Combined Detachment

HQ - Destroyer Lord (Warlord, Phase Shifter, Warscythe, Nightmare Shroud)
HQ - Orikan the Diviner
Troop - 5x Immortals
Troop - 5x Immortals
Troop - 10x Warriors (Ghost Ark)
Elite - 6x Lychguard (Hyperphase Sword, Dispersion Shields)
Elite - 5x Deathmarks
Elite - 10x Flayed Ones

Formation - Conclave of the Burning One

Elite - C'Tan Shard of the Nightbringer - 240 points
HQ - Cryptek (Phase Shifter, The God Shackle, The Solar Staff) - 115 points
HQ - Cryptek (The Veil of Darkness) - 90 points

So I understand that the list is far from complete.  I am trying to figure out a way to bring in more Crypteks to help me with some units.  In an ideal world I even get an Overlord in on the action for some AP2, Armorbane goodness.

I'm trying to refrain from bringing flyers but I may not have many options.  But for now at least I have a basis.  If I could bring a Decurion detachment, I'd be set as I'd simply bring a play on what I took to the tournament this past weekend.  Perhaps that isn't quite in the spirit of the narrative play.

Still, if the "practice" session we had at Dogs of War was any indication, other people will not be pulling the punches.

What should I bring?  A Triarch Stalker?  Some more Canoptek goodies?  Perhaps the markings of a small Scarab Farm?  Flyers?

Strangeway Games Tournament Report (02/25)

So wow, this tournament ended up being nothing of what I expected.  I had posted earlier about how there was a 2000 point tournament coming up.  I suppose when looking closely the list composition rules were quite simple.  2000 points.  No unbound.  Really I should've known that this would be a more 'Ard Boyz style event but just assumed that it would be mostly regular stuff.  Boy was I mistaken!

I had pretty much been hell bent on running the list I posted earlier in the week but after listening to a few random YouTube videos out there, I opted to tweak my list.  I wanted to field the Decurion and still have my two beatstick units...but figured I should take a more MSU type approach.  As a result, I modified my list and took this to the tournament.

2000 points of "Annoying as Hell"/"Will Not DIE!!!" Necrons

Necron List - 2000 points (Decurion/CAD/Formation)

Decurion Detachment

I opted to reduce the amount of Lychguard under the assumption that most "good" players would just maneuver around the unit.  Still, 6 guys plus Orikan and my Overlord was what I felt was necessary to survive and still threaten a good amount of units.  By in large, I was not mistaken but arguably could've dropped another Lychguard (though  I don't know of anything I would've taken in their place).

I figured I would be able to weather most air force style lists thinking that at worst I'd be contending with some bombers or perhaps the occasional Storm Raven or Valkyrie/Vendetta.  I'd simply use the outstanding durability of the Necrons to my advantage.

I guess I was mostly correct.  I went against some pretty tough lists all things considered.  I did have a lot of fun most of the time and while I did openly state that some games felt like pulling teeth, I can also see where facing my list was equally frustrating to quite a few players.  I'm going to try my best to post the lists I faced from memory then do a semi-quick recap and name an MVP.  With that said...on to the games!

Troops - 3x Bikers

In the first game I faced against Cam (Camden?) and his Zhadsnark Da Rippa bike list.  It was very much a popular build from a lot of ITC batreps I'd seen in the past.  I can't help but think there are some inaccuracies in the list.  I know that Zhadsnark does let Bike Boyz become troops, but don't think that is conferred to the Ork Waagh Detachment.  I had originally confused a rule where I thought you had to choose either Buzzgob or Zhadsnark to be in the list but not both, but I don't think that is the case.

Anyway, the first mission was Emperor's Will.  I placed my objective to the right on my side of the table and he placed his in the opposite corner.  We rolled off and Cam elected to go first.  We were playing on a table full of large buildings that I would've assumed were LOS blocking.  Though once the game began there were clearly places where LOS could be established.  He scouted up his main bike boy squad and got pretty close to my Lychstar.  I held two Immortal Squads, one Ghost Ark Warrior Squad, my Deathmarks, and my Flayed Ones in reserve.  I was confident that his Stompa would only have limited success with shooting.

The first turn did seem to dictate quite a bit of things that would impact the game.  He managed to hit my one Ghost Ark with his Lifta Droppa.  I wasn't clear on whether to count it as a shooting attack or not (especially given the Night Fight rules were in effect) but he destroyed it and we ruled that the Warriors simply disembarked in the place of the Ghost Ark (before dropping it on my Lychstar).  He was seemingly gunning hard for my Immortals holding my one objective.  Unfortunately for him, he could not charge on Turn 1 and I proceeded to approach with my Lychstar and charge him.  That combat would basically go on for 3 turns with my Overlord challenging out a character every turn until there was nothing left.  Despite having Power Klaws and a good amount of attacks (being Orks and all), a 3++ (re-rolling 1's) followed by a 4+ Reanimation Protocol re-rolling 1's was too much to overcome.  Once Orikan went supersaiyan, it was all but over.

Throughout the game he would consistently shoot at my Necron units only to have them come back with a 4+ RP roll.  We reached the bottom of Turn 4 and I had possession of both objectives and he only had 2 Grot Tanks and the Stompa left.  I had 3 or so units in his deployment zone and there was only 7 minutes left.  We should've called the game but I allowed it to go on.  Instead of claiming an 8-2 victory (6 points for objectives, slay the warlord, and linebreaker) I lost all the units on his objective and lost linebreaker as well.  We ended during his shooting phase but even then I would've been able to Deep Strike a unit of Flayed Ones in on his objective had I been allowed my movement phase.  I settled for a 3-1 victory (points-wise, a "minor victory").

Cam was a great opponent and while he didn't know all the rules, I did generally think he had a great grasp on the game.  I guess he was unfamiliar with the Lychstar concept and was more concerned with the C'Tan and his posse.

Game MVP - Necron Overlord

That guy was a beatstick!  He murdered Orks and the re-rolls he provided were ultra valuable.  I can't discount Orikan as he also provided some much needed re-rolls.  Necrons don't have a ton of offensive threats but boy can they weather the storm!

One funny thing is that we broke for lunch afterwards and as I sat down to eat I heard Cam talking to two guys about how unkillable (annoying?) my list was to play against.  His two friends answered back almost in unison, "Just let him take on my list...I'll have answers for his units."  Prophetic words.

Game 2 - Tzeentch Soiree

Formation - Rehati War Sect

HQ - Magnus the Red - 650 points
HQ - Exalted Sorcerer Masterly Level 3, Disk - 215 points
HQ - Exalted Sorcerer Masterly Level 3, Disk, Boon of Chaos - 225 points
HQ - Exalted Sorcerer Masterly Level 3, Disk - 215 points

Formation - Tzeentch Flavored Daemon "Decurion"

HQ - Herald on Disk, Impossible Robe, Exalted Gift (Grimoire of True Names?) - 130 points
HQ - 9x (Individual) Exalted Flamers of Tzeentch (Core?) - 450 points
HQ - 1x Karanak (Auxiliary?) - 120 points

So one thing to disclose...I tend to like playing with dice who's colors match my army.  Normally when I play my orange Iron Hands I use orange dice.  When I play my purple Chaos Space Marines I use purple dice.  My buddy LaMonte gave me the dice for every Chaos deity years ago so I had to use my blue Tzeentch dice.  How would they fair against an army (mostly) dedicated to Tzeentch?

I found out that Cody is Cam's brother and had brought a pretty tough list to play against.  I was surprised that he "only" had 15 dice for casting but with Magnus it would prove to be more than enough.  His list was predicated on 2+ save re-rolling and then using the Exalted Flamers of Tzeentch and Warpflame shenanigans to dominate.  I had seen lists with Screamers and Pink Horrors before, but never seen someone spam Exalted Flamers.  I thought I was familiar with a lot of the Daemon stuff but found was still thoroughly confused.  When I play an army of similar unit spam, I constantly find myself asking "What weapons/buffs does this model have?" and in this case, "Which units have the 2+ re-rollable?"  Cody was a very honorable opponent and was always more than willing to answer the questions.

It took Cody up to the 3rd Exalted Sorcerer to roll for Cursed Earth to activate the +1 to Invulnerable saves from blessings.  It was normally an exercise in futility to fire at his units.  Ultimately this would be a game of "who could outlast whom?"  He went first and deployed first.  I tried to seize and see if I could by chance find a way to bring down Magnus before he took flight or started doing crazy casting shenanigans...but failed to do so.  If I won this game, I would have to simply play to the mission and try to survive until the end.  With the ability to cast D strength spells and absolutely no Psyker defense to speak of, I knew I was in for an uphill battle.  We played "Contact Lost" from the Maelstrom missions.  Holding objectives would be key as that would be the limiting factor regarding the future generation of Tactical Objective cards...something I was very much aware of.

In the first turn I would say I got lucky as Cody didn't get the Grimoire off and had to separate the death star to maximize effectiveness and minimize the penalty.  Throughout the game Cody tried to take advantage of being able to shift the warp storm table up or down one point to maximize the damage.  Unfortunately for him, he rolled a 2 and a 3 on two consecutive turns and basically opted to stick to Daemonic Instability tests across his army.  Looking at the Exalted Flamer stat-line though, he probably should've failed a lot more rolls as they are Leadership 7, not 9.

From the get-go, Cody was able to use various Malefic Daemonology powers to summon Khorne Heralds and other daemons using Incursion.  Interestingly enough, Cody was also paranoid about the power behind the Conclave of the Burning One and thought that with his 2+ re-rollable he could perhaps buff Karanak and the other Heralds to the point where he could tie up my Lychstar indefinitely.  I guess in hindsight, that was a bit of his undoing.  Cody generally wrecked a ton on the first two turns with spells and summoning.  But after the Psyker phase Turn 2, he opted to engage the Conclave with Magnus and the Lychstar with his Khorne guys.  Neither of those combats went his way.

In combat, the Conclave of the Burning One managed to keep Magnus the Red entertained for the rest of the game.  I do concede that it was a combination of Magnus whiffing on dice rolls (he often only inflicted 2 or 3 wounds per assault phase)...and also my Nightbringer rolling like a beast with a 4++ and his FNP when applicable (of note, I successfully managed to pass a warpflame test and his FNP went from a 5+ to a 4+).  As Magnus was in combat, most of the time he could not contribute to the psyker phase.

Against my Lychstar, Orikan went supersaiyan in round 2 but I completely messed up and treated him as being Strength and Toughness 5, not 7.  That would be huge as I normally was rolling on 4's or 5's to wound instead of rolling for 2's.  It took multiple turns but I eventually managed to take out Karanak and the other Heralds he has summoned.

The rest of my army worked to slowly take out the other Exalted Flamers and summoned daemons.  I used my Deep Striking units to take control of the board and by in large controlled 4-5 of the objectives in most turns whereas he only controlled the center of the board.  As the weapons the Flamers had were Heavy, he had to choose when he moved to take advantage of the Torrent Flamer or Strength 10 (!!!) shots.

A combination of limited (and bad) card draws for him and plentiful (and good) cards for me lead to me ultimately winning something like 8-7, another minor victory.  I think it would've been a larger margin but he had first blood and did manage to score some maelstrom points towards the end.

Game MVP - Shard of the Nightbringer (C'Tan)

When I was charged by Magnus, I never in a million years thought I would survive the relentless onslaught of a Daemon Prince Primarch.  I mean I know that he was never the best in CC, but that guy had fleshbane (to nullify my Toughness 8) and had 7 attacks at weapon skill and ballistic skill infinity.  Oh man...I just realized that the Nightbringer has WS 6.  That definitely would've made a difference in the first two games.  In any case, he ended the game with a single wound (he rolled horribly for Gaze of Death all game).  But again, denying Magnus from using his psychic shooting was huge.

I had just assumed I would lose this game when I saw what I was playing.  I had no offensive prowess, no way to shut down the psykers, and had enough threats to nullify saves and only allow at best a reanimation protocol roll.  Early on I admitted to Cody that the match would be horrible for me and it was one I dreaded...but needed to learn to play against Daemons all the same.

In the end, the  resilience of the Necrons and playing to the mission was my path to victory.  I was a little annoyed when Cody kept declaring to people, "It isn't his saves that are saving him...it's the dice!"  Did I make a ton of Invulnerable and Reanimation Protocol rolls?  Sure.  But I also can't discount that I was forcing him to shoot at those units and using the one defense mechanism I had to my advantage.  Every time an Exalted Flamer or other unit would go out of range of his re-roll cursed earth bubble, I would take advantage of the situation and nuke it to high heaven.

So having gone an improbable 2-0,  I knew I would be on the top table for the day.  I was going to be matched up against yet another tough matchup.  The only way I would win that one is by playing to the mission and hoping that I could score enough Maelstrom points to secure the victory.

To explain a bit more, when I showed up I knew I was in for a rough day.  One player was playing the new Aeldari rules with a bunch of soul burst shenanigans powered by offensive units.  Another player was playing with a Warhound Titan (!!!).  Of course I saw Magnus, a Stompa, and a freaking Thunderhawk!  I was worried when in previous tournaments I'd seen IG flyer spam and other really good lists.  But I really had no good answers to some of the Forgeworld shenanigans.

Game 3 - Space Marine Flyer Extravaganza

Now this list I will have to purely go off memory because it was a conglomeration of 30K rules, Forgeworld rules, and all sorts of other stuff.  The fact that the player was using the Death from the Skies supplement only made me that much saltier as it is a format that I've seen used exactly zero times in competitive play.  QQ more Heri!  By that point I was playing what most considered (by this point) to be Necron cheese.

Flyer Formation

Thunderhawk - all sorts of Iron Hands upgrades that basically made him AV12 all around, he had a turbo laser on the top, a ton of bombs, -2 to any weapon's strength on him, and a 5+ Invulnerable

Flyer Formation

3x Fire Raptors - again, Iron Hands with a squad leader.  Strafing run.  Ignores Cover (in most situations).  The Bolter up front with Strength 6 and AP3, 2x Autocannons (each), 4x Missiles, and also AV12 all around and -1 Strength to any weapon that shot at them.

Assassin Formation

2x Culexus Assassins (basically so he didn't auto-lose Turn 1)

So I won't lie, there are a billion things I was annoyed with but really he was completely in his rights to play the list he played.  JP himself was a nice dude.  He brought the one type of list I really had no answers to...I would simply have to play the mission and rely on my Reanimation Protocols (and in most cases, cover save) to win the day.

I accepted when he said that because of Death from the Skies he had air superiority.  That pretty much meant I only brought guys in on a 6+ and he came in on a 2+.  As a result I'd start the Deathmarks in reserve hoping to last until Turn 4 where they might come in clutch and grab a stray objective.  Outside of me finding and murdering both his assassins and him rolling 1's to enter the board on Turn 2, I would have to fight hard for 5 turns to win the game.

Another rule I was a bit annoyed by was the establishment that he could "take no cover save" as he was flying high and I could always see him (not a big deal since he could jink or rely on his natural defense of me having to hit only on snap shots)...the real setback was that he claimed that I could not basically hide from him in any situation.  There were buildings and a sky shield landing pad that I would argue would completely hide a few units from his shooting arcs.  Despite that he said they weren't officially a fortification and I was *NOT* inside any of the buildings.  Given that he had AP3 and AP4 in spades, I'd need to basically rely on Reanimation Protocols to win me the day (as on top of that he would use the pattern that gifted him ignores cover to his squads).

So early on I thought I could win the mission based on Maelstrom, but he drew two cards at the beginning of the game that gifted him a 2 point lead (he had to have all the objectives revealed and drew the card for the single objective he controlled).

The game was a shooting gallery for him.  My dice finally started to abandon me at the worst time.  He was forcing me to only roll Reanimation Protocols and I was strung out across the board.  I only had two units with Invulnerable saves that would give me a chance at winning.

I was pleased when I deep struck my C'Tan shard and absolutely murdered his Culexus Warlord using Death Gaze.  I rolled a 15 and he failed the saves to keep him alive.  The victory was short lived as my C'Tan was promptly exploded by a D-weapon the following turn.

Once Turn 4 came around, he had neutralized the bulk of my forces but I had built a sizeable lead in Maelstrom points.  I believe I was up 10-6 at this point.  With so few threats remaining, he dropped his flyers into hover mode and proceeded to start going after objectives while slowly plinking away at what little was left of my army.  I was definitely amused when a squad of 10 Warriors was cut down to a single robot (who proceeded to make his Reanimation Protocols and Leadership test rolls).  The following turn that one guy took the full fire of one Fire Raptor.  RIP Agent Doggett!

So at the end of Turn 5, I was up 12-11.  I had linebreaker.  I had no cards that I could score and he had 1 he could score immediately.   If the game ended, I would pull off the narrowest of victories.  I had two units of Deathmarks and my Lychstar on the table.  He had everything but one assassin.

I rolled the dice to see if the game ended.  I rolled a 5.  GG.

In his turn he annihilated my Deathmarks but my Lychstar was in tact.  My Overlord was the 2nd closest to the Thunderhawks but he could survive the onslaught.  Right?

Hrmmm...so he started by firing Heavy Bolters and Lascannons.  The  Lascannon managed to eliminate a single Lychguard putting my Overlord front and center for the Heavy Bolters.  With a 2+, re-rolling 1's I was good.  Then came the Turbolaser shot.  It scattered!  3 hits though so that meant 3 to wound rolls.  3.  3.  6!  Oh no...well I have a LOS.  Of course I had to roll for the 6 first and all I needed was not a 1.

...
...
...

1.  Game over.  No saves of any kind allowed.  No Reanimation Protocols.  We finish up the rest of the shooting and I did manage to pass with 3+ Invulnerable Saves.  After that on my turn I re-adjust but I drew 3 shitty cards (none of which I could score as the objectives were on the opposite end of the board).  At that point it didn't matter.  I had given up Slay the Warlord and he had scored one point.  I could only keep losing from there (especially given the rules for the mission).

So I lost, 13-12.  We both had Linebreaker and Slay the Warlord.  He had First Blood.  I guess I should've been a bit more careful in placing my Overlord.  I know I was trying to set up a charge where he would be guaranteed to use his Armorbane Warscythe on a Fire Raptor but there was precious little to gain.  Honestly at best I was relying on luck that he didn't draw any good Score Objective cards and I would do the opposite.

Game MVP - Shard of the Nightbringer (C'Tan)

It is always hard to figure out an MVP during a loss, but again this guy drew a lion's share of fire power and paranoia.  He also put me in a great position by absolutely destroying the Culexus Assassin.  His Death Gaze ability circumvents any anti-psyker and snap shot shenanigans.  It also came on a turn where I had a card where I could get D3 points from having slain the warlord (I rolled a 3 giving me 2 points).

I had originally worried about facing a flyer list, knowing full well that I had no good source of skyfire and bringing Night Scythes was an exercise in futility as their AP - weapons would just force me to get a jink out of enemy flyers at best.

This game was entertaining to an extent, but also one of those games you dread.  Basically I could not interact with my opponent other than rolling for saves.  These are the types of games where people will claim that 40K is unbalanced (yeah, it is...no big deal).  My inexperience with Death from the Skies and 30K lists played a large part.  But I'm kidding myself as I knew that again I only could rely on my resilience and the mission to claim a victory.

Overall Thoughts

I finished the day 2-1 and while I didn't win overall, I still got 2nd highest battle points and got tickets to an escape room experience and some store credit.  Skip was running a sale this weekend on Start Collecting boxes and since he had no Mechanicus boxes, I picked up a Blood Angels box to round out the Blood Angels Gauntlet Tactical Squad I had picked up the week before.

I have to admit that unleashing an entire army's worth of shots into a unit and only taking 1 casualty is annoying.  While I didn't have any 2+ re-rolling saves, I know that against just about anything I stood a good chance of surviving.  I'm sure my opponents were also annoyed with that aspect of having to face my list.

Perhaps it was prophetic that one of the guys that said "Just let him take on my list" proved to be the one that beat me.  While I would've only lost even worse had the game gone on, I did still only lose by a point meaning that I was in it until the end.

Playing in this type of tournament does show me the toughness and resilience that Necrons bring to the table.  While the Conclave of the Burning One didn't do everything I wanted, in most situations I found that it did more than enough to mess with my opponents plans.  It forced my opponents to focus on him and his unit all the while the rest of my army was left to operate semi efficiently.

As a result, my overall tournament MVP is my Shard of the Nightbringer and his two lackeys.

Another observation...I listen to quite a few podcasts regarding big tournaments.  With the LVO being the biggest one in recent memory, I've heard at least 10 or so recounts of how players won and lost.  My one takeaway is that the winners that went far basically gamed the system.  In most situations they know there is a Maelstrom component and an Objective/Kill Point component.  Most of the best players are content to win one mission and give up the other.  Where they win the game is by winning the tie breakers.  They can always reliably get Linebreaker meaning they tie at worst in this point.  They bring a nearly indestructible Warlord.  Again, at worst they tie this but in most situations can claim it.  The third?  First Blood.  In ITC you have First Kill or somesuch.  Basically you need to ensure that you can claim a point from killing an enemy unit on turn 1.

In this tournament I yielded First Blood in every game and it did two things:

1.  It either gifted the game to my opponent (in hindsight).
2.  It kept him in the running.

Ironically, Necrons would be the army I'd expect to persevere and allow me a chance at claiming First Blood.  But this is something I really need to be mindful of, especially if I want to give my team at Crucible a chance to win!
